Up to 20% of the adult population experiences hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating in the arm pits. This can sometimes lead to ruined clothes and embarrassment at work or in social situations. If antiperspirants don’t seem to help, Sweat Gland Ablation can be used to treat the problem. While short-term solutions such as
Botox® can provide temporary relief, this also requires indefinite maintenance. In contrast, Sweat Gland Ablation can stop excessive sweating.
The procedure typically takes less than an hour and is performed with relaxation and local anesthesia. Dr. Elizabeth will utilize a laser fiber under the skin to ablate the sweat glands in the axillary (arm pit) area.
You may experience some swelling, bruising and soreness for a few days following sweat gland ablation. Most people are able to return to work the following day, and are able to resume most normal activities within a week or two. This technique is effective in ablating typically 90% of the sweat glands in the treated area.
