Your Guide to a Chin Augmentation Procedure

In the last five years, the number of people opting for plastic surgery procedures in the US has increased significantly. In fact, in 2017 alone, plastic surgeons across America performed 17.5 million procedures.

So if you’re thinking of having a little work done, then you’re in good company!

Chin augmentation is an increasingly popular procedure for people who want to rejuvenate their faces. It’s a great way to target sagging around the jawline and keep you looking youthful.

Want to know more about this amazing procedure? Then you’re in the right place! Read on to find out everything you need to know about chin augmentation.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that helps to create facial symmetry.

This usually involves a chin implant although in some cases a surgeon may actually just reposition your chin bone. An implant sits underneath your chin, bringing the line of your chin forward and giving you a smoother, more defined jawline.

Your chin is critical to creating facial symmetry as it balances out the nose and forehead. And facial balance plays a huge role in what we find attractive. So, by matching the rest of your face’s proportions, chin plastic surgery will give improve your appearance in a way that appears natural.

Who Can Benefit from this Procedure?

There are lots of people who can benefit from chin augmentation.

If you have a weaker jawline, then getting a chin implant is a great way to fix this. This can have a big impact on your appearance, as it addresses the underlying structure of your face rather.

But chin augmentation is also great if you want to combat the signs of aging.

Over time, the fibers in our skin stretch out and this causes it to sag. This is a totally natural process but it can be hard to come to terms with nevertheless. One place you will often be aware of this is around your jawline.

A chin implant can help to reduce the appearance of sagging by giving your skin something to stretch further over. It will also help to lift the skin in your neck, making this appearance smoother.

If you really want to target your sagging skin, then you could also combine your procedure with a facelift or some precision contouring. This combination is sure you give your face a new lease of life!

Finally, if you’re going in for another facial procedure then it might be a good idea to talk to your surgeon about an implant. Some procedures, such as rhinoplasties, target similar areas of your face. Getting both done at once minimizes how much time you have to spend in surgery!

So what can you expect from chin augmentation? Let’s take look at the procedure.

Your Initial Consultation

To begin with, you will have an initial consultation with your surgeon to discuss what you hope to achieve from the procedure. During this meeting, you will have the chance to discuss your surgical options and ask any questions you might have.

Your surgeon will take this opportunity to closely examine your face shape and size to decide the best implant shape for your face.

They will show you different jawlines to get an idea of what you’d like. It’s a good idea to take your surgeon’s advice on what will work for your face. They have plenty of experience and will want to achieve the best results to suit you.

But if you have specific ideas in mind, don’t be afraid to voice these. After all, it’s your procedure and your face!

Some surgeons may decide that it may be more effective to reposition your current chin bone instead. If this is the case, the will discuss it thoroughly during this consultation.

Your chin implant surgeons will also want to get an idea of your medical history so bring this information with you. You will receive a local anesthetic and sedation during your procedure. This is why it’s important for your doctors to have a comprehensive medical background.

Your consultation is also the perfect moment to discuss any other procedures that you’re considering. Some surgeons may recommend combining your augmentation with a neck lift or lower facelift.

Even if the other procedure you want doesn’t relate to your face, it’s worth mentioning it. Your surgeon may decide it’s best to perform both procedures in one go so that you only have one lot of recovery time.

Once you’ve finalized your procedure, all that’s left to do is book it in for a time that suits you!

What Happens During Chin Implant Surgery?

For your chin augmentation procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic and sedation via an IV drip. This means that you will be asleep for the surgery and won’t remember it afterward. If you are having more than one procedure then your surgeon may recommend a general anesthetic to keep you sedated for longer.

This is a very straightforward surgery and usually takes around an hour or two.

Your doctor will make a small incision and insert your implant through this. The position of the incision varies depending on your facial structure before surgery. Some surgeons also prefer to use a particular position of incision.

Extraoral incisions are made on the outside of your face. Usually, a surgeon will make a small incision either underneath your chin or below your bottom lip. These leave minimal scarring, which fades with time.

Your surgeon may decide to make an intraoral incision instead. This involves making a cut inside your mouth and inserting the implant through that. This leaves no scarring whatsoever.

If you have a preferred type of incision, then you should discuss this with your surgeon at your initial consultation.

Once the implant is in place, your surgeon will secure it to your jawbone. This keeps it firmly in place over time. Then they simply close up the incision and bring you around slowly!

Following your op, they may prescribe some pain killers to manage any aching and reduce swelling.

Recovering from Chin Augmentation

For surgery, chin implant recovery time is remarkably fast.

You are likely to experience some swelling or bruising after your surgery. It’s important to keep this in mind, as this can make your new jawline initially look a lot bigger than it is. So don’t be shocked if the results seem more extreme when you first come around!

This swelling will go down with time. Applying a cold compress and keeping your head elevated for the first 48 hours will help reduce swelling. After one or two weeks the swelling and bruising will significantly decrease and will continue to improve as time goes on.

After five to seven days you will have to come back in to have your stitches removed. You may notice some pinkness around the incision but this will fade with time and eventually become barely noticeable.

As we already mentioned, you can avoid scarring altogether if you have intraoral incisions. These are also great as they heal very quickly.

However, it’s extremely important to maintain a rigorous oral hygiene regime if you opt for intraoral stitches. If you don’t do this then the chances of getting an infection are significant.

Most patients are ready to go back to work or start socializing again a week after their procedure. You can also resume some light exercise after a week but should avoid contact sports for at least a month following surgery.

Side Effects of Chin Augmentation Surgery

Like any surgery, chin augmentation comes with side effects. If you’re worried about any of these it’s important that you discuss them with your surgeon at your initial consultation.

The chances of suffering a serious complication are very slight but you shouldn’t overlook them before having surgery. They include suffering from hematoma, seroma or nerve damage. You could also experience problems with bone erosion or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after surgery.

In some cases, silicone implants have caused minor erosion of the jawbone. However, this is usually no more than two millimeters and doesn’t result in any noticeable changes to your facial structure.

You may also notice some initial numbness following your procedure but don’t worry. This should ease off over time.

If you have any concerns at all about your surgery you should contact your surgeon. However, if you experience any of the following then you should seek their advice or see another medical professional:

  • A high fever (more than 101 degrees)
  • Sudden swelling or change in color of your lower face
  • A hemorrhage
  • Increasing tenderness and redness around the incision
  • An allergic reaction to any post-operative drugs
  • A shift in the position of your chin implant

While these side effects are rare and easy to repair, they require medical help to fix them. So don’t hesitate to seek this out.

Most infections can be managed using antibiotic medication. In some rare cases, it may be necessary to remove the implant in order to eliminate the infection.

Fortunately, the benefits of chin plants far outweigh minimal side effects. Let’s take a look at some of these.

It Will Boost Your Confidence

Artists around the globe have been setting aside time to appreciate a strong profile for hundreds of years. The Romans immortalized them in marble busts, while silhouette artistry hit its peak in the 1800s. And not one of those silhouettes features a weak jawline!

While a lot of modern beauty standards seem to focus on your eyes, lips, and skin, it might surprise you just how much difference your chin makes. This is the frame of your face so striking the right balance with it can make a remarkable difference.

Feeling self-conscious of your chin is also difficult, as there’s no easy way to hide it either. You can’t simply dress it up, hide it with a hairdo or throw on some shades. Your chin is always on show.

So getting a chin implant can make the world of difference. It will enable you to hold your head high and lead with your newfound confidence.

And this will touch every area of your life. From relationships to work to socializing, you’ll no longer need to hide away.

It Can Work Wonders on Your Neck

Your chin also plays a big role in the appearance of your neck.

If your chin sits too low or too far back, then it’s easy for the dreaded double chin to form no matter your weight! Moving the chin up and forward elongates the skin underneath your chin and stops it from folding.

This also naturally lifts the rest of the skin on your neck. As such, one of the side effects of this procedure is reduced sagging in your neck. If that’s not a perk, we don’t know what is!

The Bottom Line

You might be surprised at how much of a difference chin augmentation could make to your appearance and your confidence. This simple procedure will leave you looking fresh-faced and rejuvenated in next-to-no time.
